AboutWell... Here goes nothing :-) I'm a special needs Dad. My son Johnny is 25 years old and has extreme autism. Think adult toddler. He's never spoken a word, still uses diapers, and has epilepsy. We're thankful and blessed that he hasn't had a seizure in over two years. Before that, it was very bad. Seizures several times a month and would come with no notice or heads up. The last one resulted in him smashing his head into the wall and breaking his big toe. We CAN'T take him to the hospital or Doctors office. He gets very agitated and can get combative. I won't bore you with those "war stories". You've all probably got your own. NOBODY GETS IT, DO THEY? Whether it's Autism Spectrum Disorder, Cerebral Palsy, a Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injuries, Epilepsy, or other special needs situations (including one's associated with older individuals like Dementia or Early Onset Alzheimer's) we caregivers live a life that others really can't relate to. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEM. WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM IF AN EMERGENCY HAPPENS TO US? Well, I started this service out of fear and anxiety. Years ago, my wife and daughter left for Chicago for the week for my daughters National Dancing Competition. I was in bed a couple nights after they left and a panic set over me. I literally couldn't sleep. I kept asking myself "What if I had a heart attack or something while the girls were gone? What would happen to Johnny? If the police or fire department had to come to the house, what would they do? Johnny doesn't speak. He has the mind of a toddler. " The same feeling set in a couple years ago as I pushed Johnny around in his "adult stroller" as we went for a walk. "What if something happened to me. Johnny is totally defenseless, doesn't know danger, and can't communicate." This haunted me every time we went for a walk. I know I'm not the only special needs parent or caregiver that feels this way. We live a life where outsiders don't understand. They don't feel the fear, anxiety, and worry that we feel on a daily basis. This is why I created The Special Needs Protector LLC. I hope you never have to use it, but in the event you do, I hope it helps and assists first responders, police, fire, and the general public in caring for your special needs or elderly loved one in the event of an emergency. Sincerely, Johnny's Dad |
